On Tuesday, the Marauders made the snowy trek to visit the Beech Grove Hornets. The game started as soon as the Marauders stepped off the bus, not giving the team much time to get acclimated to their surroundings or getting game-ready. Luckily, for the Marauders, the Hornets struggled to get their game going, as well. Both teams played sloppily in the first quarter, as Beech Grove ended the first with a 6-4 lead.
The second proved to be the deciding quarter, as Connor Cox aggressively took control of the game. Cox wasn’t going to be stopped as he scored at will & opened up opportunities for his mates. Kiryn Dahl & AJ Swingle made their presence known as they actively owned the paint, both offensively & defensively, grabbing rebounds & giving MV second-chance opportunities By holding the Hornets to only two second quarter points, the Marauders took a big lead into halftime, 26-8.
The “Grove” flourished in the third, as the Hornets made some headway on the Marauder lead. The Hornets stung quickly with two 3-pointers, forcing MV to take a timeout to regroup. The Marauders came back out with solid defense & rebounding, but struggled to score on offense. AJ Swingle had a great quarter, as he single-handedly picked the Hornets offense’ pocket, with four steals & finished on contested layups. The Marauders lead was 11, at the end of the third, 31-19.
The Marauders controlled the fourth, as ball control & foul shooting were key. But, the Hornets wouldn’t fly away as they swarmed the Marauders & caused some disruption to MV’s offensive flow. Cox came through strong, knocking down key free throws & blocked a few shots, defensively. The Marauders extinguished the Hornets, out of their own nest, 36-28. Improving the “A” team record to 12-1, on the season.
MV was led by Cox with 10 points, 2 assists, 2 steals, 5 rebounds, & 2 blocks. Swingle finished with 8 points, 4 steals, 2 rebounds.
After a slow start in the “A” game, you would think the “B” team – Marauders would learn from that mistake & jump out of the gate. But, MV found themselves down quickly, 9-1,by the end of the first.
The second quarter showed some life from the Marauder bench, as Jack Greer & Chauncey Agbor brought along their jumper cables to jump start the team’s battery. MV won the quarter, but went into the half down, 16-9.
Out of the half, Scott Lohman took over the defense with 3 steals. The “L” – Lohman train stole the ball, chugged coast to coast, taking his “passengers”/defenders for a ride as he drove the hoop & got fouled. Lohman’s energy kept the Marauders in this game, as MV fought it’s way back with defense & rebounding. But, the Marauders were still down 22-15.
The fourth quarter was an exciting one, as MV pulled closer to BG, but simply ran out of time (as BGMS used a running clock). The Marauders dropped this close one, losing 30-25 & taking the “B” team record to 4-2, on the season.
Scott Lohman was an animal, scoring 11 points, 3 steals, 6 rebounds, & a block for the Marauders.
