The Lady Marauders defended their home course on Saturday in the first ever Sectional Championship run at Mt. Vernon High school.
The top 5 teams of the 14 team field advance from the Sectional level as there are no classes in Indiana High School Cross Country. Goliaths like Carmel compete against Davids like Cambridge City- Lincoln to make for interesting match-ups and storylines throughout the state. In addition to the top 5 advancing teams, the top 10 individuals from non-advancing teams will also get a chance to compete individually at the Regional level.
New Palestine won a decisive victory over the field and Franklin Central was 2nd. Roncalli took 3rd, the Lady Marauders were 4th, and Warren Central rounded out the field of advancing teams in 5th.
Running once again without their number one runner from much of the season, several Marauders had career days while a couple others ran average, but by no means bad, races. Ladies that struggled mightily last week, rebounded in a big way and took pride in defending their home course, most notably Esther Parham who ran #1 for the Marauders for the first time this season.
“I’m really proud of the effort today. We could have phoned it in these last few meets after a rough HHC meet, but it was awesome that the girls used that for motivation rather than an deterrent. Roncalli ran really well today. It will be fun to race them next week when we have Rilee back, especially if both teams run well. It’s always more fun to beat a team when they are on their game rather than one that has their tail between their legs. We had four girls PR today. Esther had an amazing breakout race that she really needed! I’ve always know that an effort like that was in there lurking, but the most important part was that she believed it today as well. That was awesome to see that come to fruition. I’m really proud of her. Kam and Lydia worked together the entire time to earn PRs. They kept eyes up throughout the race and you could see the wheels turning as they looked for teams and individuals to beat. Morgan Tharp also had a good race once again with a huge PR. Our freshmen today didn’t have their best races, but they did compete throughout. Didn’t feel like it was for a lack of effort in any way.” said Coach Coy.
“I am definitely excited for next week and I think the girls are too. We had a nice race last year at Regionals and I think the girls are anxious to get back on Rushville’s course.”
A big thank you goes out to all of the parents, volunteers, staff, and alumni for making this first ever Mt. Vernon Sectional go off without a hitch. Coaches, parents, and athletes from opposing schools commented/emailed/texted throughout the day how much they loved the course and the experience that we provided for this meet. The abundance of support we received on race day made that possible.
