Girls Varsity Cross Country · Girls XC Advances to Shelbyville Semi-State!

  Place Points
Mt. Vernon High School - Fortville 4th 113

The Lady Marauders traveled to Rushville on Saturday for the Regional cross Country meet and walked away as semi-state qualifiers for the 14th consecutive season.

Although they certainly didn’t run as well as they did at the Sectional, the Lady Marauders did enough to hold off the competition and secure a 4th place finish and ticket to the Shelbyville Semi-state next Saturday.

IHSAA Regionals include the five advancing teams from two Sectionals and the top 10 individuals from non-advancing teams from each of those two Sectionals to create a field of 10 schools and 90 athletes. Top five teams from four Regionals and top 10 individuals from non-advancing teams will compete at Semi-state. For Mt. Vernon, that means a berth to the Shelbyville Semi-state which promises to feature some of the best programs and schools not only in Indiana, but in the Mid-west in general.

The schools joining Mt. Vernon will be County-Rival New Palestine who took the Regional team title for the second consecutive year, Franklin Central (2nd), Roncalli (3rd), and Warren Central (5th). Hancock County athletes Audrey Brinkruff from Greenfield Central and Ashton Willis from Eastern Hancock are also to be congratulated on fantastic races and for advancing as individuals.

“We had a solid team race today,” said Coach Coy. “We had to realize pretty quickly that times were not going to be fast. We had a lot of girls step up and run really well today and a couple others that struggled to focus through the middle or final portions of the race. I didn’t feel like we felt pressured this week and that’s great. We knew we couldn’t beat New Pal or FC, so we kind of had to just blue collar our way into that top 5 by working those middle packs. Holy Cow though. Esther is on fire right now. She ran another gem of a race and just looks totally focused and in her element right now. Was also thrilled to have Rilee back. She ran exceptionally well after having so much time off. No one would have faulted her if she ran poorly, but she just gutted that baby out. Loved that competitiveness. Kam, Tori, Lydia, Mindy, and Morgan were a little down on themselves with times, but everyone ran slow today. Not just MV girls. If we even just have just three of those five keyed in next week, we might be able to surprise some people. I’m looking forward to it. Coach Kendall always says to embrace the pain and next week they are going to have to hurt like they haven’t hurt all year. Pressure is off. Just about running your race with 100% focus throught all five kilometers.”

The boys also took 4th on the day and advanced as a team to the semi-state next week!
