The who’s who of Indiana high school cross country descended upon the Indiana Wesleyan Cross Country Course on Saturday for the annual Marion Invitational.
Competing in the Large school (purple) division, the short-handed Lady Marauders were able to race their way to a runner-up finish behind perennial cross country powerhouse FW Concordia Lutheran. The second place finish ensures that the Lady Marauders will compete in the “Elite” division for the 2020 cross country season.
Though a few girls admittedly had off days, a huge contingent of Marauder ladies set all-time personal bests on Saturday, including Rilee Hartman, Melinda Sue Cornelius, Tori Jenson, Morgan Tharp, Madelyn Ludlow, Tessa Freeman, Mary Nichols, Alyssa White, and Vivian Ortiz.
“We learned a lot today, a lot of positive takeaways.” said Coach Coy. “We had a very tough week of practice and ran very well to take 2nd without our number 3 runner, but I also came to some realizations about how much of a weekly load some of the girls can take and still perform. Everything up until October is super competitive practice for the big meets like HHC and the state tournament series. We will continue to tinker with the training to ensure that we hit big on the ones that matter most. We can’t be satisfied with 2nd, but I felt like the girls competed very well today and I’m proud of the effort from all 14 girls that ran. Now we need to double down on smart, strategic racing. Great day to be a Marauder in a program on the rise.”
HHC foes New Palestine and Pendleton Heights competed in the “Elite” division after top two finishes in the 2018 season taking 12th and 15th, while Delta and Yorktown competed in the mid-sized “Gold” division and took 2nd and 4th.
