WIth the stage set at Pendleton Heights High school on Saturday, the Lady Marauders, running without their #1 due to illness, were unable to find any rhythm throughout the race.
Two Marauders, FR. Tori Jenson and SO. Morgan Tharp, were able to battle through and put together excellent races, but several others were unable to attach themselves to others throughout the race and ended up running in no man’s land for the majority of the 5K.
“It was a bummer to not have Rilee today. Whether the others want to admit it or not, that was certainly a psychological blow right before race time. I think that we were just a bit deflated and weren’t able to really refocus on the race. That, combined with Yorktown running a fantastic race, was a recipe for disaster. Delta really benefitted the most as they were able to pick up the scraps. Team wise, I still think we are much better than those two squads, but hats off to their coaches and girls for putting it together when it mattered,” said Coach Coy.
“Tori ran great today. She got a stinking PR on a course that no one ever PRs on. She looked determined from the jump. She got outkicked in that final straight for all-Conference, but she is only a freshman. She’ll have 3 more shots to earn that honor and I fully expect her to do so. Morgan Tharp also ran another really solid race for the 2nd week in a row. She didn’t PR, but she is starting to figure this whole thing out. I’ll go back to the drawing board yet again to see if I can figure out how to get 5 girls to hit on the same day,” Coy added. “Now we need to really refocus on Sectional. We are favored to advance from both the Sectional and Regional, but I want to make sure we are looking up to the next team and not over our shoulder.”
Mt. Vernon will host the sectional on Saturday with the boys race starting at 10:00 and the girls 10:45. Top 5 teams advance to the Rushville Regional the following week.
